"I won't act my age"

Buenas dias! Well, at least when I'm writing this lol. We actually had a pretty good week! A lot of fun moments. I swear time just keeps going by faster and faster. Somehow I'm only a week away from finishing my third transfer. How did that happen?!? By far the fastest transfer yet.

This week we've really started to hit street contacting hard. We call it OYMing (open your mouth). So basically we just try to talk to everyone. We also are allowed to knock on doors of people previously taught. Not gonna lie, it is for sure taking me out of my comfort zone because I just don't want to annoy people haha. But turns out I'm starting to like it! It also helps that Hermana Babcock is good at making conversation, so when I'm super awkward she can step in, lol. The first night we tried it we already had a super cool conversation with a woman and are hopefully gonna start teaching her! She was super willing to give us her number, and get this, even answered us when we texted her! Haha! If you're a missionary, you'll understand how that feels. It honestly just feels good when people are nice to us. Even if it doesn't result in a new person to teach, I'm just grateful to get to know people and hopefully show them we aren't bad people.

Now of course, in the Book of Mormon, the prophet Nephi teaches us there is opposition in all things soooo here goes this fun time ... We knocked on this guy's door and he didn't answer. But we could see them through the window and knew they were home. Now, we are persistent missionaries. So we knocked again and waited a bit. Well finally when we decided to give up and started writing down our number to leave at their door, this guy answers. He swings open the door and says something like this "is this some kind of emergency?! I'm on the phone with my mother in Arizona. You can't just hang around out here! You knock once and you leave. GO!" *points us out and slams the door as I try to get the words "thank you for your time" out. Honestly, all I could do was laugh about it. Let's just say we are a bit more wary of door knocking and from now on won't be hanging around for too long. Luckily, we had an epic lesson with Clint after that to restore our faith in humanity.

The next day we had in-person zone conference. This one was much more enjoyable than the virtual one. I honestly think I was just in a better head space this time. But what was cool was it was very focused on in-person contacting, which was what we had just experienced the night before! Also, another cool experience was that I was asked to give a 3 minute talk on the spot. President has asked us all to write talks on the Christlike attributes so we can always be prepared. I decided to write a little talk on humility, and the night before, I randomly pictured myself giving a talk at zone conference so I started rehearsing what I would say. And I thought to myself, well thats random. But turns out it was just the Spirit preparing me. Not sure how coherent my talk was, but it was fun.

We had some pretty bomb dinners this week. We teach this adorable couple Sandra and Andrew, and they invited us over for dinner. Sandra was so cute. She was telling me all about how diligent she was in checking all the labels just to make sure I wasn't gonna eat anything I was allergic too. She even made taco shells out of baked cheese (which were actually so yummy). She made these cute little tapioca pudding desserts too. It always means to much to me when people care about not trying to poison me. Also we had like the best meatloaf ever from our relief society president. And I'm really not a meatloaf fan. But she made it gluten free and everything. It even had zucchini, carrots, and onions. We love hidden veggies. Man now I'm making myself hungry. She is a super talented chef and super fancy about it too. Basically I'm just a good food connoisseur, and its always a plus when it looks beautiful.

Alright and now time for another Trinity and Betty Jo story. I was mopping in the kitchen when Betty Jo starts ooooing and ahhhing over how good of a job I was doing. Then she goes "now because you girls do just such a good job guess what I'm gonna give you to reward you? One avocado each." If you tell little old ladies you like avocado, they are probably gonna remember. And then later I hear a conversation going on between Betty Jo and Hermana Babcock. I hear Babcock ask how old they were, and then hear Betty Jo's response. She goes "we were born in the 60's! I'm 56 and Trinity is 57!" Yeah keep telling yourself that Betty Jo... I've done my poking around and according to Trinity's master's degree hanging on her wall, she graduated in 1971. Unless she got her master's when she was 11, I don't think she was born in the 60's. Man it killed me. They are always telling us age is an attitude, not a number! So they are just gonna keep on rolling till they're 100! (and thanks One Direction for today's song lyric title which perfectly describes Ms Trinity and Betty Jo!)

Our mission insta pages will be up and running on July 1st!! So give rise.with.christ some love on Thursday! Its kinda wild and we aren't super prepared yet. The next two days we all have to create a bunch of content to be ready for it. I made a practice reel this morning about staying hydrated just to be sure I knew how to use it... I think I'm pretty funny. I will try to add it to my pictures. Lol I made a reference in it to a cute card one of my little cousins sent me. So don't be confused. Also today we went to Sprouts and Target. But you will all be proud of me because the only thing I got at Sprouts were 3 lollipops and I didn't even pay for them!! The story is pretty rad.

This couple hopped in line and they looked so familiar. I realized that last week I totally liked and commented on one of her insta posts. So I was brave and was like "oh my gosh, I think I saw you on insta the other day!" We ended up having a fun convo. It may seem weird but it made me so happy. As a missionary its hard to feel normal, and so just having those random interactions in a grocery store make you feel like a real human. I put my lollipops through right after this couple and the cashier accidentally put them on their tab. Then the guy goes, "its ok, we can get them. She's our new friend." Ok maybe its the fact that we are coming out of a pandemic, but it made my day.

Really it goes back to the little things. Random coincidences in the grocery store, little old ladies giving you avocados, or cheese taco shells. These little things remind me life is good. That everything is going to be ok. That God is in the details.

Learning to be patient in the Lord's timing isn't easy. It's easy for me to worry about things I can't control. But over these past 4 months, God has been working on me and hopefully I will come out the other side more resilient, more understanding, and more willing to "stand still and see the salvation of God."

Don't forget that Jesus loves you,

Sister wallace
